What is on the PTCB exam? The four PTCE domains
- Medications (40%): generic and brand names and drug classes, therapeutic equivalence, interactions and contraindications, strengths, dosage forms and routes, side effects and allergies, indications, drug stability, narrow therapeutic index drugs, compounding incompatibilities and storage.
- Federal requirements (12.5%): pharmaceutical and hazardous waste, controlled-substance prescriptions and DEA schedules, DEA rules for ordering, storing, dispensing, take-back and loss or theft, restricted drug programs (pseudoephedrine, REMS) and FDA recalls.
- Patient safety and quality assurance (26.25%): high-alert and look-alike/sound-alike drugs, error prevention (Tall Man lettering, zero rules, barcodes, error-prone abbreviations), issues for the pharmacist, event reporting (MedWatch, near misses, root-cause analysis), prescription errors and hygiene.
- Order entry and processing (21.25%): non-sterile compounding, calculations and sig codes, equipment and supplies (syringes, spacers, diabetic supplies), lot numbers, expiration dates and NDC numbers, and returns.
The questions on this page are original practice questions written from PTCB's public content outline, not real PTCE questions.
PTCB math: the calculations to know
PTCB marks several outline areas as calculation-based. Practise these on paper:
- Days' supply: quantity ÷ amount used per day. Example: #120, 2 tabs bid: 120 ÷ 4 = 30 days.
- Dose volume: 400 mg from 250 mg/5 mL: 400 × 5 ÷ 250 = 8 mL.
- Weight-based doses: lb ÷ 2.2 = kg, then × mg/kg.
- Dilutions: C1 × V1 = C2 × V2.
- Alligation: mixing a stronger and a weaker product to reach a strength in between.
- Percent and ratio strength: 1% w/v = 1 g per 100 mL = 10 mg/mL; 1:1,000 = 1 mg/mL.
- Conversions: 1 tsp = 5 mL, 1 tbsp = 15 mL, 1 kg = 2.2 lb, 1 mg = 1,000 mcg, 1 grain = 65 mg, °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
- Sig codes and Roman numerals: bid, tid, qid, ac, pc, prn, po, OD/OS/OU; ii = 2, XL = 40, XC = 90.
Every calculation in the MyLevel tests comes with a worked, step-by-step explanation.
What score do you need to pass the PTCB exam?
PTCB reports a scaled score from 1,000 to 1,600, and the passing scaled score is 1,400. A scaled score is not a percentage of correct answers, so no practice test can predict your exact PTCE score.
After each MyLevel test you see your score per PTCE domain and an indicative readiness band. Use it to find your weakest domain, read every explanation, and take the second full test under time a week before your exam.
The full pack costs $9.99, one time: two full 90-question tests with the real 1 h 50 min timer, an explanation for every answer, a score per domain and a practice certificate. No subscription. One purchase also unlocks every other MyLevel job test.
MyLevel is independent and not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). PTCB and PTCE are trademarks of PTCB. All questions are original practice questions based on the public PTCE content outline, not real exam questions.
Sample question with explanation
Rx: Amoxicillin 400 mg/5 mL oral suspension
Sig: 1 tsp po bid x 10 daysHow many mL should be dispensed?
- 50 mL
- 100 mL
- 150 mL
- 200 mL
Show the answer
Answer: B. 100 mL
Step 1: 1 tsp = 5 mL. Step 2: 5 mL × 2 doses a day (bid = twice a day) = 10 mL a day. Step 3: 10 mL × 10 days = 100 mL.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the PTCB exam?
The PTCE has 90 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour and 50 minutes: 80 scored and 10 unscored questions that are not identified. Plan 2 hours in total, including a short tutorial and a survey.
What score do you need to pass the PTCB exam?
The passing scaled score is 1,400 on a scale of 1,000 to 1,600. A scaled score is not a percentage, so practice scores give a rough idea of readiness, not a predicted PTCE score.
Is there math on the PTCB exam?
Yes. PTCB's content outline marks several areas as calculation-based, mainly in order entry (days' supply, doses, dilutions, alligations, conversions, sig codes) and some medication and federal topics. Every calculation in the MyLevel tests is solved step by step.
Are these real PTCB exam questions?
No. These are original questions written by MyLevel on the topics in PTCB's public PTCE content outline. Real PTCE questions are not published, and no site can legally offer them.
What do I get for $9.99?
Two full timed practice tests of 90 questions each with the real 1 h 50 min limit, weighted like the four PTCE domains, an explanation for every answer (step by step for calculations), your score per domain and a practice certificate. One-time payment, no subscription, and it also unlocks every other MyLevel job test.
Can I unlock only this test?
Yes. Under the pack button you can unlock only the full tests on this page for $3.99, one time. The $9.99 job pack unlocks every MyLevel job test. Both are one-time payments with no subscription.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. After a full practice test you can download a MyLevel practice certificate (PDF) with your score. It is a personal record of your practice, not a PTCB certification, a CPhT credential or a PTCE score.
