How the course works

Read a few short tips, then type one practice line. You see your words per minute and accuracy straight away, and you can repeat a lesson as often as you like. After lesson 5 you take the one-minute typing test; MyLevel's server measures it, and your best result goes on your certificate.

The 5 lessons

1. Find the home row (free): posture, ASDF and JKL;, the bumps on F and J.
2. The top row: reach up and come straight back home.
3. The bottom row and the space bar: curl down, keep your wrist still, alternate thumbs.
4. Rhythm and accuracy: an even pace beats fast bursts with mistakes.
5. Capitals, numbers and your final test: Shift with the other hand, numbers two rows up.

Lesson 1 in short

• Sit up straight, screen at eye level, wrists floating just above the desk.
• Left fingers on A S D F, right fingers on J K L ;. Feel the bumps on F and J.
• Each finger only presses the keys straight above and below its home key; thumbs are for the space bar.
• After every key, go back home, and look at the screen, not at your hands.

On a phone or a computer

Touch typing is learned best on a keyboard, but every lesson also works on a phone with two thumbs. The certificate states whether your test was typed on a phone or a computer.
