- Pass: 15/20 + all 5 values
- Certificate when you pass
How the Australian citizenship test works
The test has 20 multiple-choice questions and you have 45 minutes. To pass you need at least 15 correct answers (75%) and you must answer all 5 Australian values questions correctly. That means a score of 18 out of 20 is still a fail if one of the values questions is wrong.
All questions are based on the testable section (Parts 1–4) of the official resource Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond. Our mock exams follow the same format: 20 questions, a 45-minute timer, 5 values questions and the 15/20 plus 5/5 pass rule.

What to study
Only Parts 1–4 of Our Common Bond are testable:
- Australia and its people: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the First Fleet (1788), the gold rush, Federation (1 January 1901), states, territories and capitals, the flags, the Coat of Arms and national days.
- Democratic beliefs, rights and liberties: parliamentary democracy, the rule of law, freedom of speech, association and religion, and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.
- Government and the law: the Constitution and referendums, the separation of powers, the King, the Governor-General and the Prime Minister, Parliament, the three levels of government, courts and police.
- Australian values: equality, a fair go, mutual respect and tolerance, mateship, English as the national language, and what the law allows and forbids.
The book is free on the Department of Home Affairs website and is available in 40 community languages. The test itself is in English.
Tips to pass
- Master the values first. One wrong values answer means a fail, whatever your total. Most values questions describe a situation: choose the answer that respects the law, equality and peaceful behaviour.
- Know who does what. The King is Head of State, the Governor-General represents the King and the Prime Minister leads the government. Premiers lead states; Chief Ministers lead territories.
- Learn the three levels of government. Defence and immigration are federal; schools, hospitals and police are state or territory; rubbish collection, libraries and building permits are local.
- Memorise key dates and numbers. 26 January 1788, 1 January 1901, 25 April 1915, the 1967 Referendum, 12 senators per state.
- Read every option. 45 minutes for 20 questions is enough time, so read all four answers before you choose.
