USPS Virtual Entry Assessment 474 practice test

…

Prepare for the VEA 474, the online assessment for USPS mail carrier jobs such as City Carrier Assistant and Rural Carrier Associate. Practice work scenarios, work-style choices and experience questions, with a short explanation for every answer.

What is the VEA 474?

The Virtual Entry Assessment (VEA) is the online assessment the United States Postal Service uses for most entry-level jobs. Version 474 covers mail carrier jobs: City Carrier, City Carrier Assistant (CCA), Rural Carrier and Rural Carrier Associate (RCA). If a job posting requires it, you receive an email invitation after you apply in eCareer.

According to the USPS assessments page, the VEA takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You take it online, unproctored, on a computer, tablet or phone, and you have 72 hours to complete it. If you miss the deadline, you are no longer considered for that job. USPS does not charge for its exams.

What is on the assessment

USPS does not publish the exact content, number of items or scoring of each version, but candidate guides and prep sites describe the 474 as a set of short exercises:

The other versions follow the same idea for other job groups: 475 for Mail Handlers, 476 for Mail Processing Clerks and 477 for Sales and Services clerks. Prep guides also describe a "Check for Errors" address-checking exercise in the mail handler and mail processing versions.

How to prepare

The VEA is not a knowledge test, so there is nothing to memorize. What helps is understanding what the job demands and what the Postal Service values: safety first, secure mail, following procedures, reliability, honest communication with your supervisor and courteous customer service.

The MyLevel pack has a free 5-question sample and two full tests of 40 original questions, each with a 45-minute timer and an explanation for every answer.

After the assessment

VEA results are not emailed. You find them in your eCareer profile under Show Roadmap and then Assessments, usually as eligible or ineligible. A passing result also counts for other jobs that require the same version until it expires. Passing does not guarantee a job: hiring depends on local needs, and the next steps can include an interview, a background check and, for driving jobs, a review of your driving record.

If you are ineligible, you cannot retake the same version for 12 months, but you can apply right away for jobs that use a different version, such as the 475, 476 or 477.

MyLevel is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the United States Postal Service. All questions are original practice questions written by MyLevel, not real VEA items. USPS does not charge for its assessments.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the VEA 474 take?

USPS says the assessment takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You have 72 hours to complete it, and if you miss that deadline you are no longer considered for that job.

What score do I need to pass the VEA 474?

USPS reports results as eligible or ineligible, sometimes with a score, and does not publish its scoring key. Prep guides commonly cite 70 as the pass mark, so the MyLevel practice tests use 70% as the target.

Can I retake the VEA 474?

Not for 12 months after your most recent attempt at the same version. You can take a different version, such as the 475, 476 or 477, right away if you apply for a job in that group.

What is the difference between the 474, 475, 476 and 477?

Each version belongs to a job group: 474 for mail carriers, 475 for mail handlers, 476 for mail processing clerks and 477 for sales and services clerks. The job posting lists which one you need.

Are these the real USPS questions?

No. USPS does not publish VEA items. Every MyLevel question is original and written to practice the same kinds of judgment: safety, reliability, following procedures, integrity and customer service.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. After each full practice test you can download a MyLevel practice certificate PDF with your score. It is a practice certificate, not a USPS result.
