How the citizenship test works
The test has 20 questions, multiple choice or true/false, in English or French. You pass with at least 15 correct answers (75%). Most applicants aged 18 to 54 take it online: you get an invitation, a 30-day window to take the test and 45 minutes once the timer starts.
You have up to 3 chances to pass. If you fail all 3, IRCC invites you to a hearing with a citizenship official. If you need an accommodation, you can take the test in person or on Microsoft Teams. Source: IRCC, canada.ca (test pages updated March 2026).
What to study
All questions come from the official study guide Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. Our questions follow its chapters: rights and responsibilities, who we are, Canada's history, modern Canada, how Canadians govern themselves, federal elections, the justice system, symbols and holidays, the economy and Canada's regions.
The guide dates from 2009, so some facts in it are out of date. We use current values instead: King Charles III, Prime Minister Mark Carney, Governor General Louise Arbour and 343 federal electoral districts (checked October 2026).
How MyLevel practice works
Practise all 279 questions for free, by chapter or mixed, with a short explanation after every answer. When you feel ready, take a full mock exam: 20 random questions, a 45-minute timer and the real pass mark of 15. Mock exams cost $6.99, one time and include error analysis, so you can see which topics to review.
Tips to pass
- Read Discover Canada from start to finish at least once, then practise one chapter at a time.
- Learn key dates: 1867 (Confederation), 1982 (Charter of Rights and Freedoms), 1949 (Newfoundland and Labrador), 1999 (Nunavut).
- Know the provincial and territorial capitals and who represents the Sovereign at each level of government.
- Check the current Prime Minister, Governor General and monarch; the guide is older than they are.
- Do timed mock exams until you score 17 or more out of 20 every time.
MyLevel is an independent practice site and is not affiliated with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or the Government of Canada.
