CDL practice test: free general knowledge questions

…

Prepare for the CDL general knowledge test (the CDL permit test) with original practice questions based on the topics every state CDL manual covers. Start with 5 free questions, then take two full 50-question tests with an explanation for every answer.

How many questions are on the CDL general knowledge test?

In most states the CDL general knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions and you need 40 correct (80%) to pass, so you can miss up to 10. The 80% pass mark is a federal rule for every CDL knowledge test (49 CFR 383.135); the number of questions is set by each state, and almost all use 50.

What is on the CDL permit test?

The general knowledge test follows the model CDL manual that every state bases its own manual on. MyLevel groups the questions into four areas:

Air brakes, combination vehicles, hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger and school bus are separate endorsement or restriction tests and are not part of this pack.

From permit to CDL: the steps

  1. Get a DOT medical examiner's certificate (valid for up to 24 months).
  2. Pass the general knowledge test (and any endorsement tests you need) at your state DMV to get a commercial learner's permit (CLP).
  3. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days. A CLP is valid for up to 1 year.
  4. If this is your first Class A or B CDL, complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
  5. Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and the road test.

How to pass the CDL test the first time

The full pack costs $12.99, one time: two full 50-question tests, explanations, a score per section and a practice certificate. No subscription. One purchase also unlocks every other MyLevel job test.

MyLevel is independent and not affiliated with, or endorsed by, FMCSA, AAMVA or any state DMV. All questions are original practice questions based on the topics in the model CDL manual and federal rules, not real test questions.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions can I miss on the CDL general knowledge test?

In most states the test has 50 questions and you need 40 correct (80%), so you can miss up to 10. Check your state's DMV, because the number of questions is set by the state.

Is the CDL permit test hard?

Many people fail the first time because the 80% pass mark leaves little room and the test asks exact numbers. If you study the manual and score 90% or more on practice tests, you are well prepared.

Is the CDL general knowledge test timed?

Usually there is no strict time limit at the DMV, but some testing systems close after a set time. MyLevel uses a 60-minute timer for 50 questions to help you keep a steady pace.

Are these the real CDL test questions?

No. These are original questions written by MyLevel on the same topics as the general knowledge section of the CDL manual. Real test questions are not published, and no site can legally offer them.

What do I get for $12.99?

Two full timed practice tests of 50 questions each, an explanation for every answer, a score per section and a practice certificate. It is a one-time payment, no subscription, and it also unlocks every other MyLevel job test.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. After a full practice test you can download a MyLevel practice certificate (PDF) with your score. It is a personal record of your practice, not an official document or a CDL test result.
