What is on the GED test?
The GED test has four separate subject tests. You can take them one at a time, in any order.
| Subject | Time | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematical Reasoning | 115 minutes | Basic math, geometry, basic algebra, graphs and functions |
| Reasoning Through Language Arts | 150 minutes (incl. 45-minute essay) | Reading for meaning, arguments, grammar and language |
| Science | 90 minutes | Reading science texts, experiments, numbers and graphics |
| Social Studies | 70 minutes | Civics, U.S. history, economics, maps and graphs |
Questions are mostly multiple choice, plus drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, drop-down and select-an-area items. A calculator is available on part 2 of the math test and on Science and Social Studies, and math comes with a formula sheet. Source: ged.com test subjects page, checked October 2026.
How is the GED scored and what is a passing score?
Each subject is scored from 100 to 200. You need 145 or higher on every subject to pass and earn your high school equivalency credential. A score of 165+ is called GED College Ready, and 175+ College Ready + Credit, which may count for college credit.
The 145 is a scaled score, not a percentage, so there is no fixed number of questions you must get right. As a rough sign of readiness, aim for 65% or more on the MyLevel practice tests, and 70-75% in every subject for a safer margin. This is indicative only.
Free GED practice test and the full practice pack
The 5 free questions mix all four subjects, so you see at once where you stand. The full pack has two practice tests of 50 questions each (about 15 math, 14 language arts, 11 science and 10 social studies questions), with a 90-minute timer. Short reading passages are part of the questions, as on the real test. Every question has an explanation, and your result shows a score per subject.
The pack costs $9.99, one time. No subscription. One purchase also unlocks every other MyLevel job and aptitude test. The RLA essay is not part of this pack.
How to study for the GED and pass the first time
- Math: master percents, fractions and ratios, then equations, slope and area/volume. Use the formula sheet when you practice, so you know where things are.
- Language arts: for every passage ask: what is the main idea, what is the claim, and what is the evidence? Review commas, apostrophes, run-ons and agreement.
- Science: most questions test reasoning, not memory: variables, control groups, tables and graphs.
- Social studies: know the Constitution, the three branches, key amendments and basic economics, and practice reading maps and cartoons.
- Take one subject at a time and book it when you score well on practice in that subject.

Sample question with explanation
Under the U.S. Constitution, the President can veto a bill passed by Congress, but Congress can override the veto with a two-thirds vote in both houses. This is an example of:
- Federalism
- Popular sovereignty
- Judicial review
- Checks and balances
Show the answer
Answer: D. Checks and balances
Each branch can limit the power of another; the veto and the override are a classic example of checks and balances.
Frequently asked questions
Is this GED practice test free?
Yes, the first 5 questions with explanations are free and need no sign-up. The two full 50-question practice tests cost $9.99 one time.
How many questions are on the GED test?
The number varies by subject and test form, and GED Testing Service does not publish a fixed count. Each subject is timed: math 115 minutes, language arts 150 minutes, science 90 minutes and social studies 70 minutes.
What score do I need to pass the GED?
You need at least 145 out of 200 on each of the four subjects. On the MyLevel practice tests, 65% or more correct is a rough sign you are getting close; it is indicative, because the real score is scaled.
Are these the real GED test questions?
No. These are original questions written by MyLevel on the same subjects and skills as the GED test. Real test questions are not published, and no site can legally offer them.
Is the GED math test hard?
Many people find math the hardest subject. It covers basic math, geometry, algebra and graphs, but you get a formula sheet and a calculator for most of it. Regular practice with explanations helps most.
Can I unlock only this test?
Yes. Under the pack button you can unlock only the full tests on this page for $3.99, one time. The $9.99 job pack unlocks every MyLevel job test. Both are one-time payments with no subscription.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. After a full practice test you can download a MyLevel practice certificate (PDF) with your score. It is a personal record of your practice, not an official document, a GED score or a high school equivalency credential.
