What is on the Accuplacer test?
ACCUPLACER is a set of college placement tests from College Board. Your college uses the results to place you in the right English and math courses. The Next-Generation version has five multiple-choice tests; your college decides which ones you take.
| Test | Questions | Main topics |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 20 | Main idea, details, inference, author's purpose, vocabulary in context, comparing two texts |
| Writing | 25 | Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, transitions, clear and concise wording |
| Arithmetic | 20 | Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, comparing numbers |
| Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra and Statistics (QAS) | 20 | Ratios, exponents, linear equations, probability, statistics, basic geometry |
| Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF) | 20 | Quadratics, functions, radical, exponential and log equations, trigonometry |

How is the Accuplacer scored, and what is a passing score?
Each Next-Generation test is scored from 200 to 300. There is no pass or fail: every college sets its own cut scores to decide which course you start in, so ask your college or advisor which score you need. The tests are computer-adaptive (the next question depends on your previous answers) and generally untimed. Handheld calculators are not allowed on the math tests; an on-screen calculator may appear on some questions.
MyLevel practice tests have 50 questions (10 per test area) with a 75-minute timer to build a steady pace. Your practice result is a raw score with your score per section, not an ACCUPLACER score.
Accuplacer math practice: arithmetic, QAS and AAF
- Arithmetic: add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and decimals by hand, convert between fractions, decimals and percents, and solve percent problems such as discounts and percent change.
- QAS: solve linear equations and inequalities, work with ratios, rates and exponents, find slope, mean and median, and simple probability, area and perimeter.
- AAF: factor and solve quadratics, use function notation, solve radical, exponential and log equations, solve systems of equations and use basic trig ratios.
Every math question in this pack has a step-by-step explanation, so you can see where an answer went wrong.
How to prepare for the Accuplacer reading and writing tests
- Read the question before the passage, so you know what to look for. The right answer is always supported by the text.
- For vocabulary questions, put each choice into the sentence and keep the meaning.
- For writing, learn the rules that come up most: subject-verb agreement, comma splices, its/it's, pronoun case and parallel lists.
- Take your time: the real test is untimed, so check each answer before you move on. You cannot go back to earlier questions on an adaptive test.
The full pack costs $9.99, one time: two full 50-question practice tests, explanations, a score per section and a practice certificate. No subscription. One purchase also unlocks every other MyLevel job and aptitude test.
MyLevel is independent and not affiliated with, or endorsed by, College Board or any college. ACCUPLACER is a registered trademark of College Board. All questions are original practice questions based on the public Next-Generation ACCUPLACER test specifications, not real test questions.
Sample question with explanation
Which word best completes the sentence? "The team finished the project early, ___ the manager gave everyone Friday off."
- although
- because
- but
- so
Show the answer
Answer: D. so
The second clause is a result of the first, so the result word "so" fits. "Because" reverses the cause and effect.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Accuplacer score?
There is no pass or fail. Scores run from 200 to 300 on each test, and each college sets its own cut scores for course placement. Ask your college which score you need for the course you want.
Is the Accuplacer test hard?
It is adaptive, so questions get harder when you answer correctly. Most people find it manageable if they review fractions, percents, basic algebra and grammar rules first, and take their time because the test is generally untimed.
How long does the Accuplacer take?
The multiple-choice tests are generally untimed, so how long it takes depends on you and on how many tests your college asks for. Ask your testing center how much time to plan. MyLevel uses a 75-minute timer for 50 questions to help you keep a steady pace.
Are these the real Accuplacer test questions?
No. These are original questions written by MyLevel on the same topics as the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER test specifications. Real test questions are not published, and no site can legally offer them.
What do I get for $9.99?
Two full practice tests of 50 questions each on reading, writing, arithmetic, QAS and AAF, an explanation for every answer, a score per section and a practice certificate. It is a one-time payment, no subscription, and it also unlocks every other MyLevel job test.
Can I unlock only this test?
Yes. Under the pack button you can unlock only the full tests on this page for $3.99, one time. The $9.99 job pack unlocks every MyLevel job test. Both are one-time payments with no subscription.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. After a full practice test you can download a MyLevel practice certificate (PDF) with your score. It is a personal record of your practice, not an official document or an ACCUPLACER score.
